Obstacle Avoidance: What is OAS?

What is OAS?

OAS stands for Obstacle Avoidance System. It is a flight-assistance feature that helps a compatible drone detect certain obstacles within its sensing area. It gives you an extra layer of assistance while you remain responsible for steering, clearance and safe flight.

For P90 Max: choose With Module to include the laser obstacle avoidance module. Without Module does not include this module. OAS is an aid, not a collision guarantee or an autonomous navigation system.

Should I choose Without Module or With Module?

  • Without Module: the package does not include the obstacle avoidance module. You must judge clearance and avoid obstacles yourself.
  • With Module: the package includes the compatible obstacle avoidance module specified for that product. It can provide additional sensing assistance when correctly installed and operating within the conditions described in the manual.

With Module may be useful if you want extra assistance while learning, but beginners should still practice slow, controlled flight in a spacious, unobstructed area. Experienced pilots must also keep clear of obstacles. Compare the live option prices and package contents before ordering; the drone's other specifications are listed on its own product page.

How does OAS work?

A sensor looks for objects within its sensing area. The P90 Max optional module uses laser sensing. The aircraft's response, supported directions, operating modes and detection limits depend on the exact drone and module. Follow the model-specific manual; do not assume it will stop, steer around, or find a route past every object.

Does OAS protect every side of the drone?

Do not assume full coverage above, below or in every direction. Even a module described as 360-degree can have blind spots and operating limits; this does not mean a protective sphere surrounds the aircraft. Check the manual for supported directions, distances and speeds before flying. Leave generous clearance for the propellers as well as the body.

What obstacles can be difficult to detect?

Detection can be unreliable with thin branches, wires, nets, small or fast-moving objects, transparent glass, reflective surfaces or surfaces that return a weak sensor signal. Sensor performance can also be affected by lighting, weather, dirt, obstruction and aircraft movement. These are reasons to keep clear, not targets to use for testing.

Do not rely on OAS near people, animals, traffic, power lines, water or other hazards. Never fly toward an obstacle to see whether the system will react.

Can I use it indoors, at night or in poor weather?

OAS does not make a location suitable for flight. Confined spaces leave little room for correction, and GPS or visual positioning may also be limited indoors. Darkness, strong light, rain, fog, wind or dust may affect the aircraft or its sensors. Use only in conditions permitted by your model's manual. OAS is not permission to fly in rain or low visibility.

Is OAS the same as GPS or return-to-home?

No. GPS supports positioning and navigation. Visual positioning helps estimate position under suitable conditions. Return-to-home is a return function that depends on correct setup and flight conditions. OAS assists with obstacle sensing. None of these guarantees that the aircraft can return along an obstacle-free route. Set up the home point and return settings as directed in the manual.

Can I add OAS later? Will any module fit?

Some PiHOT models have a separately sold OAS module. Modules are model-specific; a similar shape or connector does not confirm compatibility. Before purchasing, check the accessory's model listing and your drone's exact model or revision. Availability and supported features can vary.

Before you take off

Does the controller have a built-in video screen?

The controller has a flight-status display. The live camera view is shown on a compatible smartphone mounted above the controller. Smartphone not included.

What should I know about GPS return?

Set the home point and wait for a suitable GPS signal before takeoff. Return functions depend on flight conditions and correct setup; follow the manual and keep control of the aircraft.

How long can I fly?

Enjoy up to 45 minutes of flight time per battery. Actual flight time varies with wind, speed, battery condition and use. Plan your flight with enough battery for a safe return.

What is the maximum flight and video transmission range?

The P90 Max supports up to 6 km flight and video transmission range under suitable conditions. Actual range varies with interference, obstacles and the environment. Keep the aircraft in sight, follow local requirements and reserve enough battery for a safe return.
